wHY MAAG BEGAN

Mid-MO Addiction Awareness Group (MAAG) began soon after the founder discovered her daughter had a substance use disorder. The year was 2015 shortly after her grandson’s one year birthday. At that time there was not many resources for anything dealing with SUD, especially not for parents. It wasn’t long before her daughter was arrested for the first time and Children’s Services came into the picture. Now not only was was she
seeking resources for her daughter;
she herself needed resources.

The founder took matters into her
own hands and organized the first Stop
Heroin Walk in Sullivan, Missouri. The
attendance was amazing and she knew
this could be something other towns needed. So MAAG began its venture in hosting SUD Awareness Walks in surrounding communities. As time went on, the next venture was an SUD Awareness Day in which resources from around the state would attend giving the community the resources they so desperately needed.

The founder has taken many trainings and attended many conferences to obtain knowledge about substance use disorder. MAAG in a way became her way of coping with the challenges and obstacles brought on by her daughter’s substance use.

“What began as a way to for me cope, became a way to help others cope”
